🔍 Who Needs a Clean Truck Check?

In California, nearly all heavy-duty trucks and buses with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) over 14,000 lb must undergo Clean Truck Checks before registration renewal. This includes:

Diesel, alternative-fuel, and hybrid vehicles over 14,000 lb
Semi-trucks, big rigs, trailers
Motorcoaches, transit/shuttle/school buses
Government and private commercial vehicles
California-registered motorhomes (used for recreation or emergencies)
Out‑of‑state trucks that operate on California public roads

✅ Who Is Excluded?

Certain vehicles are not subject to this regulation, including:

Zero‑emission vehicles
Emergency vehicles, military tactical vehicles, and historic vehicles
Motorhomes registered outside California
New low-NOx engines certified at the strictest standard (exempt until Jan 1, 2027)

- Non-OBD (older engines): Smoke opacity and emissions-control inspections
